Should Venezuela attack Guyana or the ExxonMobil-led consortium operating in the Stabroek block, the United States will get involved. In fact, it would be a very bad day or week for the Nicholas Maduro regime. This strong cautionary statement was issued on Thursday by United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio who is currently visiting Guyana for critical talks with the government.

Responding to a question during a press engagement at State House, Rubio said, “It will be a very bad day for the Venezuelan regime. If they were to attack Guyana or attack ExxonMobil or anything like, it would be a very bad day or very bad week for them.”

While Rubio stated that he’s not going to get into details of what exact action the U.S will take, he stressed, “We’re not big on those kind of threats. I think everybody understands, and I wanted to be clear. I think the US Navy today is making it clear and demonstrating our ability (that) we have a big Navy, and it can get almost anywhere, and can get anywhere in the world.”

Secretary Rubio made it clear that in the unfortunate event that Venezuela attacks Guyana it would be a very big “mistake”

Moreover, in his opening address, Rubio made it clear that regional threats based on “illegitimate territorial claims by a narco trafficking regime” will not be tolerated by the U.S.

“I’ve said this during my time as a senator, and I have full confidence in saying it now as a Secretary of State, there will be consequences for adventurism, there will be consequences for aggressive action,” he noted.

To this end, he underscored the importance of the US partnership with Guyana.

“That is not what we want to be a feature of our relationship, but it is a necessity of our relationship, because you have a very difficult challenge on your hands with a dictator that’s making illegitimate territorial claims. So you have our full commitment and support today,” Rubio added.
