While we are unique in our own ways, it is safe to say that we all possess a creative side. We may manifest it differently but it is definitely there.
One such individual who has a knack for creativity from as long as he can remember is 30-year-old Dominique Babb, a young man who expresses his creative side through art. Hailing from Linden in Region 10, Babb in 2020 decided to to turn his love for art into a thriving business called ‘Brave Art’.

Giving Guyana Standard an insight into his creative business and what led to its realisation, Babb said it all started off as a past time hobby. He recalled that being home during the COVID-19 period helped him to connect deeper with his creative side as he simply used art as a daily activity to pass time.

“Using whatever materials I found in and around the house to create soon became a limitation to what I was able to do. It was at this time that I decided to invest in the right tools to help with my daily addiction of painting,” he recollected. According to the young artist, through painting and posting for fun on social media, persons started to request and commission pieces and it was there that painting changed from being a pass time hobby to a business.

Being a self taught artist, Babb said some requests were beyond his knowledge and so he took to the internet to research techniques and the basics of painting so that he could advance his natural talent while meeting the needs of his customers.

In evolving his skills, Babb related that along his journey he began to express his talent in other ways. At was this stage he decided to start making customized rugs. “One notable impact in my business was adding custom rugs to what I offer as an artist. It was a leap of faith to try something different and the response has been extremely positive ever since and I’m humbled by it,” he told the Guyana Standard.

Babb said he would always reminds himself to “trust the process”. He further shared that in expressing his craft he too, like any other small business or artist, faced various challenges. In his case, he said that there were challenges in having materials at his disposal locally.
“Being able to reach new customers however, I was able to navigate those hurdles by investing more in materials imported so as to always have availability and go reach new and potential customers through an active social media presence along with the help of existing customers recommending my products to their circles,” he disclosed.

Speaking of the feedback for his work, Babb related that his support base continues to be strong and for this, he is forever grateful to those who continuously reach out to give advice and guidance along the way. As a humble and self motivated individual, Babb further said that he aspires to inspire others and believe that with God, nothing is impossible.

It is with these kind sentiments, the talented artist would like to advise anyone who is thinking of establishing their business, “to just start, no matter how small, and give it your best effort because with your investment and consistency, your business will grow. Trust the process.
