Leader of the Alliance For Change, Nigel Hughes is willing to step aside to allow for a consensus presidential candidate as the nation prepares to head to the polls this year.
Hughes made the statement during an interview with journalist, Travis Chase. He later shared an excerpt of his response on his Facebook page. Hughes also said that he is “not the important factor”, adding that he has not requested any particular role going forward.
He said that “Guyana is the important factor, with the objective being to oust the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic out of power.
Hughes currently leads the AFC, a small party compared to the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), which comprises other small organisations and the Aubrey Norton-led People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR).
Norton who also holds the position of the Opposition Leader is the number one pick for the presidential candidate of the APNU, which he also leads.
The PNCR, however, since the APNU+AFC’s 2020 defeat, has been plagued by infighting and allegations of ethnic discrimination being laid at Norton’s feet. He is recorded saying that the PNCR wishes him to be the presidential candidate, but has also given him the option of denying that position if he chooses. Norton added that no one outside of the party can make that decision, which is the responsibility of the party’s support base and the party, itself.
