The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) says it is outraged by the “orgy of official violence” which has been unleashed on the Linden community. This comment come on the heels of the fatal shooting of Ronaldo Peters, 23, and 32-year-old Keon Fogenay, also known as “Dan” who residents say was a “bystander” in a protest over Peter’s killing. Both were shot by police.
Despite assurances of an independent investigation from President Dr Irfaan Ali, the WPA said that it is not convinced.
“…We are not hopeful that anything profound will ensue. History supports our pessimism…Only a reputed international human rights body will win WPA’s cautious confidence. We do not trust any agency that may have a vested interest in Guyana. Perhaps an approach should be made to the United Nations Human Rights Council to recommend a competent agency. This is more than a police issue—it is a human rights issue,” the party said.
Even as it calls for an investigation, the party is convinced that the “intellectual authors” behind the shooting is the “collective government”, which it says has presided over a “great number of State murders in the post-colonial history of Guyana”.
“As it was in the case of the murder of the three Linden men in 2012, the recent murders of Quindon Bacchus, Peter Headly and Orin Boston, along with the hundreds who perished at the hands of officialdom and para-officialdom, the PPP’s hands are dripping with guilt and blood.”
