The Guyana Police Force recently reported that Rohan Persaud, 57-year-old man lost his life in an accident on Tuesday March 8, 2025, at about 07:00 hours. Guyana Standard understands that the incident occurred at Kamechara Creek, Lower Pomeroon River involving a 6×6 logging truck, unregistered, owned by Barakat Timbers Concession Ltd and driven by Persaud along with porter Deonarine Warren, 47.
Initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred as Warren and Persaud were heading to the backdam with the log truck. Deoanarine told investigators that it appeared as though the truck’s brakes had failed while they were climbing a hill, causing the vehicle to roll back down the hill at a fast rate.
He (Deonarine) went on to say that after the truck started to roll back, he jumped out. He claimed he later saw the truck come to halt in slush mud, and he got up and went to check on Persaud.
The porter said he observed his workmate pinned under the left side front wheel and made efforts to free him but failed.
With no success, he told police he went further along the trail to seek assistance and on the way, he met with some workers on a tractor who assisted in extracting Persaud’s body and escorted them to Charity Cottage Hospital.
Persaud was seen by a doctor who pronounced him dead on arrival.
Deonarine was also treated by the said doctor and subsequently transferred to Suddie hospital for further medical attention.
Persaud’s body is presently at the Charity Cottage Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
