The government of Guyana has announced plans to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in Berbice, marking it as the first of its kind in the region. This data centre aims to facilitate the development of a robust digital economy, providing infrastructure that supports data storage, processing, and AI applications.

The announcement was made by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali during a community meeting at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in New Amsterdam, where he also revealed plans for a US$285 million Berbice Port project that will create an additional 1,000 jobs in the region. “The Berbice Port complements the development of the deepwater port, which is expected to open up tremendous opportunities for transport, logistics, accommodation, and construction in the area,” the president stated.

Local shipping companies Muneshwers Limited and John Fernandes Limited will be investing in the Berbice Port project, with plans to break ground in the coming weeks. This substantial investment not only promises job creation but is also integral to enhancing the region’s logistics and shipping capabilities.

Alongside the data centre and the port, the government is partnering with the renowned international company Bechtel to finalize plans for the deepwater port. Bechtel has extensive experience in constructing and managing deep-water ports worldwide, making them a key player in this transformative project for Guyana.

In addition to the AI data centre and Berbice Port, President Ali highlighted the upcoming construction of a modern, high-span four-lane bridge across the Berbice River, which will eliminate toll fees for commuters upon completion. There is also a US$604 million expansion project planned for the road from Palmyra to Moleson Creek.

The president emphasized the broader vision for development in Region Six, which includes the construction of two state-of-the-art hospitals—one in New Amsterdam and another in Skeldon—each equipped with advanced medical facilities. The government’s commitment to this holistic development agenda also extends to improvements in health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure.

The New Amsterdam meeting was part of three planned engagements in Region Six, showcasing the government’s dedication to grassroots community involvement, with the president accompanied by several prominent officials, including Senior Minister in the Office of the President Dr. Ashni Singh and Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill.

As Guyana steps into a new era of development with the establishment of the AI data centre and the Berbice Port, the government aims to foster a thriving and technologically advanced economy for all citizens.
