Kenny Paul, a truck operator who allegedly dealt his general manager several chops to the face and to his left hand, was today slapped with an attempted murder charge.
Paul, 34, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was remanded to prison for the offence.
It is alleged that on May 17, 2019 at Malibunta Backdam, Mahdia, with the intent to commit murder, he wounded Paul Troy.
The unrepresented man was not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to him.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that the defendant and the victim were employed at the same dredging company.
The prosecutor told the court that, on the day in question, the two had a misunderstanding and Paul picked up a cutlass and dealt Troy several chops about his body.
Troy was then transported to the Mahdia Regional Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC); he currently remains a patient at the institution.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant based on the serious nature of the offence as well as the fact that the victim is still hospitalised.
The magistrate upheld the prosecutor’s objection and remanded Paul to prison. She also ordered that he receive counselling while awaiting his preliminary inquiry (PI).
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 16, 2019 at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
