A route 48 minibus driver and his conductor — who police say locked a 12-year-old girl in a bedroom to allow the conductor to rape her — were today slapped with sexual offence charges.

They were both remanded to prison after serious objections to bail were made by the police prosecutor.

Forty-one-year-old Roy Roach called “Roachie”, a bus driver, is accused of causing the girl to engage in sexual penetration with a third party on October 30, 2018, at Sunflower Close, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

It was further alleged that the conductor, Keron Adams, 18, engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16 on October 30, 2018 at Sunflower Close, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Both men appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. They were not required to plead to the indictable offences.

The prosecutor told the court that, on the day in question, Roach and Adams picked up the child from lessons and drove her to Adams’ house.

The court heard that while at the house, Roach told the child to go to the bedroom with Adams and he then locked the door and waited outside from where he heard the child screaming. After Adams finished having sex with the child, they took her home.

On arrival home, the child complained to her parents as to what happened and the matter was reported to the police station. An investigation was then launched and the two defendants were arrested and charged.

The court prosecutor made serious objections to bail being granted to the defendants on the grounds of the serious nature of the offences and the penalty the charges attract.

The chief magistrate, after listening to both sides, remanded the men to prison until May 29, 2019.
