A 50-year-old man who was said to be intoxicated when he allegedly stabbed his wife Farida Khayum to death was today charged and remanded to prison on a murder charge.
Devanand Narine, a chainsaw operator of Anna Regina, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that, on May 16, 2019 at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, he murdered Khayum.
Narine was represented by attorney-at-law Bernard DaSilva who told the court that, on the day in question, his client went home drunk and found a male visitor in his wife’s company.
The lawyer said that his client asked why the man was there and an argument ensued between him and the man.
The lawyer added that his client was then attacked by the male visitor and Khayum’s son. The latter, the lawyer related, then forced a poisonous substance down Narine’s throat. The lawyer added that his client was hospitalised.
However, facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, the accused went home and an argument ensued between him and his wife.
The court heard that Narine then went into the kitchen and armed himself with a knife and stabbed the woman several times about her body.
The woman then collapsed and died on the scene. The matter was reported and Narine was arrested and charged.
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Narine to prison. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on June 18, 2019 at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
