A Plaisance man who allegedly pretended to be a police officer and received $75,000 to have a divorce matter dismissed was today charged with fraud.
Forty-four-year-old Sherwin Prince of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, denied the charge which stated that, between May 22, 2019 and May 23, 2019 at Georgetown, with the intent to defraud he obtained the sum of $75,000 from Ewart Mathild by falsely pretending that he was in a position to have a divorce matter against Mathild dismissed.
The court heard that Mathild, who is currently before the Georgetown High Court involved in a divorce matter, was at the court when he met Prince. Prince allegedly pretended to be a police officer and claimed he could have the matter against Mathild dismissed for $100,000.
The victim then handed over $75,000 to Prince and said he would pay the remaining funds on his next court date.
However, the victim became suspicious, made inquiries, and later found out that the defendant was not a police officer.
The matter was then reported, an investigated was carried out, and police set up a sting operation. Prince was subsequently arrested when he approached the victim to collect the outstanding $25,000.
With no objections to bail by the prosecutor, the magistrate released Prince on $60,000 bail and instructed him to make his next court appearance on June 19.
