Sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for the murder of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara resident Michael Hamilton, Junior Henry, along with his relatives, left the courtroom in tears following his judgment.
Earlier this month, Henry, also known as ‘Oswald’, was convicted for the unlawful killing which occurred on October 7, 2013 at Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara.
According to reports, Henry shot and killed 21-year-old Hamilton and then escaped. It was reported that the killing stemmed from a sexual affair involving the men and a woman. Following the killing, the police issued a wanted bulletin for Henry.
Today, a probation report revealed that Henry admitted to lashing Hamilton with a cutlass and escaping.
Further, Henry expressed shock when he was informed that Hamilton died of gunshot wounds since, according to him, he was not armed with a gun. His lawyer, Lyndon Amsterdam begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
However, State Prosecutor Sarah Martin requested that the court impose a sentence which would reflect the nature and gravity of the offence.
Prosecutor Martin also asked the court to consider that a firearm was used in the commission of the crime and that Hamilton was only 21-years-old at the time of his demise.
Trial Judge James Bovell-Drakes imposed a sentence of 25 years and ordered that Hamilton only becomes eligible for parole after serving 15 years.
This trial was heard at the High Court in Georgetown.
