The APNU+AFC administration is not happy about a safety advisory issued by the US Department of State which urged Americans interested in visiting Guyana to be on high alert about the spike in crime. The Government of Guyana categorically stated that the country is a “safe place” and the police are suitably equipped to ensure the security of the state.
Making this declaration today was Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon.
At a press conference held at the Ministry of the Presidency, Harmon recalled that the advisory seeks to advise Americans that there is a need to be cautious and have a contingency plan for emergency situations.
The Director-General stressed, however, that an advisory is just an advisory. He said, “It is not something we can say we are happy about because when people read these things they think twice [about] travelling and investing in your country. So we cannot say we are ever happy about such advisories which speak to the security of our state.”
The official expressed confidence in the Guyana Police Force while noting that it is suitably equipped and staffed to address all crime related issues.
“From the level of Cabinet, I wish to give assurance to locals and people abroad that Guyana is a safe place to live, work, and invest,” the Director-General concluded.
