“I went selling the weed when the police came and conducted a search,” a miner admitted when he pleaded guilty to trafficking 81 grams of marijuana.
Forty-two-year-old Alex Pickette appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on June 9, 2019 at Mazaruni River, Essequibo he had in his possession 81 grams of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss stated that on the day in question, police acting on information went to a shop to carry out a search.
While there, the ranks saw Pickette acting in a suspicious manner and they conducted a search on him. The drug was found in a black plastic bag in the pocket of his pants.
When told of the offence, he stated, “I went working at the shop and when the shop man see the police coming he told me pick up the bag from the hammock and hide it. I tek it and put it in my pocket.”
When asked by the magistrate if he knew what he had in his possession was narcotics, the man answered in the affirmative and said, “Yes, I does sell it.”
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, sentenced Pickette to two and a half years on the grounds that he was truthful and he did not waste the court time.
