A 38-year-old woman was today charged and released on $250,000 after she stood accused of stealing $5.1M worth in jewellery from her employer.
Seranie Singh of 31 Timehri, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that between May 1, 2019 and June 11, 2019 at Houston, East Bank Demerara, she stole a quantity of gold and diamond jewellery valued $5.1M which were the property of Deowattie Singh, her employer.
The woman denied the charge after it was read to her.
The defendant’s lawyer, in a successful bail application, told the court that her client was working for the victim as a domestic worker.
The lawyer added that she was instructed by her client that everyone who enters and exits the premises must be subjected to a search by the security guard.
The lawyer further asked the court to grant her client reasonable bail on the grounds that the woman is the sole breadwinner of her family and had never been charged before.
While Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh did not object to bail being granted to the defendant he asked that conditions be attached.
The magistrate, after listening to both sides, released the woman on $250,000 bail. The condition of the bail is that the defendant must report every Monday to the Ruimveldt Police Station until the hearing and determination of the trial.
The woman was also instructed to lodge her passport with the court and to make her next appearance on July 26.
