In light of the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) ruling that the passage of the No-Confidence Motion on December 21, last, was valid, attorney-at-law Sanjeev Datadin told the Guyana Standard that President David Granger must dissolve Parliament immediately and set an early date for elections.
During an exclusive interview with this news agency, Datadin commented that the aforementioned ruling of the court, along with its judgement that the unilateral appointment of Justice James Patterson as the Chairman of GECOM was unconstitutional, is excellent. He said the rulings are in line with the arguments he and many others in the legal fraternity have advanced in the past few months.
The lawyer stressed as well that the rulings are in keeping with common sense, law, and reason. Further to this, the lawyer said there were apprehensions about the court displaying courage and independence in these matters. But the rulings, he said, showed that the CCJ passed all those tests admirably.
Further to this, Datadin said that the CCJ has ruled in the best interest of the nation and expects that the government would show obedience and respect for it.
As it relates to the appointment of the GECOM Chair, Datadin said that he expects Patterson’s resignation and replacement soon.
The lawyer said, “The best-case scenario is for Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo to submit a list of six names and the president be given the minimum of 72 hours to select someone from that list.”
He insists that the president must not be given a chance to further delay this process.
