Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo told the media that there will be no immediate, “major form” of protest in reaction to the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) ruling that the December 21, 2018 No-Confidence Motion against the government was properly passed. Instead, Jagdeo said “major” protest action will be pushed back until Monday when the court rules on consequential orders.
This is a reversal to the charge Jagdeo had given supporters just a few days ago. At that time, he had said that PPP supporters should prepare to hit the streets in protest once the CCJ rules against the government.
But today, Jagdeo said that the PPP wants to honour and respect the decision of the court.
This morning, the CCJ asked that the lawyers of the government and the opposition get together and try to reach a consensus by next Monday, June 24.
But Jagdeo made it clear that he will not be meeting with President David Granger or any other government official before Monday. He said that all communications will be through the lawyers. “That is how it is going to be for now,” he added.
“In the meantime, we have dusted off all other plans and the party will go into full election mode, beginning tomorrow. We will accelerate our work,” said Jagdeo.
