Even though the police are in possession of video evidence, they are yet to arrest the persons who stoned Danion Welcome, the driver, who had his truck burnt after he reportedly struck and killed seven-year-old Ciara Benjamin on June 1, last, at Agricola, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Following the accident, the driver was severely beaten by residents and stoned when he got out of his truck.
Divisional Commander, Marlon Chapman, had condemned the beating of the driver and said that an investigation will be launched immediately. That probe was supposed to see the arrest of all the persons who attacked the driver.
However, it will soon be three weeks since the accident and to date, no one has been charged—except for the driver, who was charged with causing death.
This morning, a rank who was part of the investigating team for the accident, indicated that no instructions were passed to arrest the persons who burnt the truck. He said that a probe was only conducted into the accident.
“We read that persons will be arrested but no one passed any instructions for us to launch an investigation. I have seen the video and these persons are identifiable,” the police rank said.
There is a video footage circulating on social media where three persons can be seen stoning the driver. These persons can be easily identified.
Ciara Benjamin was attempting to cross the road with her aunt, Simone Barry, when she was struck by a truck, bearing registration plate GWW 962. The little girl was pinned under the truck for several hours.
There are conflicting details as to how the seven-year-old met her demise with eyewitnesses claiming that the driver was not at fault since he tried to avoid the collision.
