Two men are now dead and their friend hospitalized after the car they were travelling in late last night exploded following a crash on the Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice (WCB) Public Road.
The deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Danny Dunraj of Chester Village, WCB, and 23-year-old Ajay (only name given) of Britannia, WCB. Injured is 16-year-old Permanand Arjune of Chester Village. Arjune sustained severe burns to his body.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that the three men were heading home after leaving a liming spot in Bath Settlement, WCB, when the driver, Dunraj, reportedly lost control of the vehicle which caused it to topple several times before crashing into a coconut tree.
According to information received, the 16-year-old managed to crawl half way out of the mangled car before it exploded. Dunraj and Ajay were said to be unconscious when the car crashed into the tree around 22:30 hrs.
The police said that eyewitnesses claimed that the men were speeding. Ranks suspected that the driver might have been under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of the vehicle.
