A 22-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his stepfather several times about his body was this afternoon charged with attempted murder.
Joel Persaud, of 16 Public Road, Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He was not required to plead to the indictable offence which stated that on June 16, 2019, at Little Diamond Public Road, East Bank, Demerara, with the intent to commit murder, he wounded George Jones, his stepfather.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, Persaud asked his mother for food and she refused. As a result, Persaud became abusive towards her and his stepfather intervened.
The court heard Persaud and Jones got into an argument and Persaud picked up a knife and stabbed Jones several times about his body before running to his neighbour’s house.
However, Persaud in addressing the court stated, “I was hospitalised because my stepfather chopped me in my back. I was sitting at the table eating when he approached me from behind and chopped me with a cutlass. I then ran out the house and went to my neighbour and the police came and rushed me to the hospital.”
Prosecutor Mansfield made serious objections to bail being granted to Persaud on the grounds of the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
The Prosecutor also highlighted the fact that the victim is still hospitalised in a serious condition at the High Dependency Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Persaud to prison until July 8, 2019.
