A bus driver who was arrested days ago in relation to 62 pounds of marijuana discovered by police in two spare wheels was today remanded to prison after being slapped with a narcotics trafficking charge.
Forty-two-year-old Seon Bakker of Wismar, Linden appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He denied the charge which stated that on June 15, 2019 at Mabaruma, he had in his possession 28,148 grams (28.148 kilograms or 62 pounds) of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question at around 17:00 hrs, ranks from the Mabaruma police outpost stopped minibus BNN 7872 which was destined to Mahdia.
While searching the vehicle, ranks observed two bulky wheels were strapped on top of the said bus. Bakker was then questioned by the ranks and he told the officers a man named Gordon asked him to take the wheels to Mahdia.
The wheels were then cut open and leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be marijuana were discovered in 29 bulky transparent plastic bags. Bakker was then arrested, told of the offence, and charged.
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Bakker to prison until July 10 when he is expected to appear in the Linden Magistrate’s Courts.
