A man who the court heard used a stolen bicycle to rob an elderly woman of a $2,600 purse was today slapped with two charges and released on $65,000 bail.
Twenty-four-year-old Akeem Cort of Campbellville, Georgetown, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge stated that on June 19, 2019 at Campbellville, Georgetown, he stole one bicycle valued at $15,000 from Jamal Cummings.
It was further alleged that on June 19, 2019, at Kitty, Georgetown, he stole a purse valued $2,600, which was the property of Joan Bailey.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh stated that on the day in question, Bailey, who is 64-year-old, was walking in Kitty when she was approached by Cort who was riding a bicycle which he allegedly stole from Cummings.
He then snatched the woman’s purse and attempted to escape but an alarm was raised and persons in the area apprehended him and handed him over to the police. Hence, he was later charged with the offence.
With no objections being raised by the prosecutor, Cort was granted bail in the sum of $65,000 under the condition that he reports every Monday to the Kitty Police Station until the hearing and determination of the trial.
Cort was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 26.
