Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan today sentenced a man to six months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to stealing the cellphone of a stranger he was consuming alcohol with on the seawall.
Morvin Akeem Mikoo, 23, of Supply, East Bank Demerara, had denied the charge which stated that on April 14, 2019 at Seawall Road, Georgetown, he stole one phone valued at $85,000, which was the property of Travis Rampaul.
Mikoo was out on $10,000 bail and had promised to repay the victim for the phone. However, he had failed to show up to court and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
This morning when the matter was called, Mikoo opted to change his not guilty plea to guilty. In addressing the court, he stated, “I didn’t had the money to pay the man so I wasn’t coming to court.”
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on April 14, 2019, at around 23:30 hrs, the victim and the defendant were on the seawall hanging out.
The court heard that after a while, Rampaul sent Mikoo to his car to get a packet of cigarettes.
After a few minutes elapsed, Rampaul went to his car and discovered his phone missing; Mikoo was nowhere to be found. Rampaul then went and reported the matter to the Alberttown Police Station.
An investigation was then carried out and Mikoo was arrested and charged with stealing the phone.
