Today, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) heard submissions from lawyers representing the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the Government, and the Opposition. The oral submissions are being delivered as the court is still to hand down consequential orders to last week’s ruling on the passage of the No-Confidence Motion and the legality of GECOM Chairman Justice (Retired) James Patterson.
CCJ President Justice Adrian Saunders expressed disappointment that the political leaders did not meet following last Tuesday’s ruling to make an effort to reach a consensus.
In response, Attorney General Basil Williams told the court that President David Granger acted “forthwith” after Tuesday’s ruling to arrange a meeting with Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo.
Williams also told the court that the ball is now in the Opposition Leader’s court. He said, “We are awaiting a response.”
However, the letter President Granger sent to the Opposition Leader was dated, June 20, two days after the ruling was made.
Also, it is said that the Opposition Leader received the letter one day after it was sent.
The President, in the letter, asked to meet at a time mutually convenient but he stated that that has to be after Monday, June 24, 2019 (today).
