A 48-year-old labourer who admitted to stealing a vendor’s cart was today sentenced to one year in prison for the offence.
Devon Williams of Industry, East Coast Demerara pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on June 17 at Water and Robb Streets, Georgetown, he stole a vendor’s cart, valued at $60,000, and other articles valuing $90,000, which were the property of Dellon Barker.
Williams appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh stated that on the day in question at around 08:00 hrs, the victim went to collect his cart at Water and Robb Streets and discovered it missing. The man then made some inquiries and he was told that Williams was seen removing the cart along with several articles.
The victim then went in search of Williams and, when he confronted him, Williams ran away. Hence, the matter was reported to the police, an investigation was later launched. and Williams was arrested for the offence.
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, sentenced Williams to one year behind bars citing that he pleaded guilty to the offence on the first opportunity given.
