Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Karen Cummings, will represent the Co-operative Republic of Guyana at the First Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Colombia, scheduled to be held in Cartagena de Indias tomorrow, Saturday, June 29, 2019.

This event is expected to provide an opportunity to enhance economic, transport, and cultural ties, among other areas, between CARICOM and Colombia.

Colombian Ambassador, Her Excellency Martha Pinilla was recently accredited to CARICOM.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations on December 18, 1970, Guyana and Colombia have had strong bilateral relations. The two countries have since collaborated on a number of projects to tackle issues such as environmental and disaster management, international drug trafficking and organised crime, and nutrition and food security.

For instance, in 2017 Guyana and Colombia signed an Agreement on the Exemption of Visa Requirements for Holders of Ordinary Passports on the margins of the 47th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Cancun, Mexico. Additionally, Guyanese public servants have benefitted from a number of Spanish courses offered by the Government of Colombia under a cultural agreement signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of the Republic of Colombia since 1970.
