A clothing vendor who police said admitted to having a quantity of marijuana was this afternoon charged and remanded to prison on a trafficking charge.
Shemroy Hackett, 30, of Lot 6 Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He denied the charge which stated that on July 8, 2019, at Bartica Police Station he had in his possession 1.184 kilograms of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, Police acting on information stopped motor car PPP 9901 where Hackett was one of three persons.
The court heard a search was carried out on a bucket which was in Hackett’s possession and a false bottom was discovered.
A further search was carried out and leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be narcotics were found in a black plastic bag in the hidden in the bucket.
He was then told of the offence and he stated, “I was trying a hustle because I recently came out from prison.” Hence, he was arrested and taken to the station.
Prosecutor Mansfield strongly objected to bail being granted to Hackett on the grounds of the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
The prosecutor also highlighted the fact that the defendant admitted to the offence. The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Hackett to prison until August 2 when he will appear in the Bartica Magistrate’s Courts.
Hackett was recently released from prison after serving time for a series of robberies and for allegedly shooting at two policemen on the East Coast of Demerara.
Hackett was on trial in the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court after he reportedly confessed to being a member of a gang.
He was slapped with six counts of armed robbery, two counts of discharging a loaded firearm with intent, and one count each of possession of guns and ammunition.
