A man who the court deemed as needing psychological intervention was this morning sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a 77-year-old woman in June 2017.

Delon Blake, 39, had earlier this week pleaded guilty to the offence before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Sexual Offences Court in Demerara.

Blake confessed that on June 20, 2017, in Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with the elderly woman without her consent.

According to information, Blake raped the pensioner and also stole her cellular phone.

Before imposing the custodial sentence, the judge considered that Blake had indicated that he was guilty since when the matter had been engaging the Magistrates’ Courts.

The Judge told Blake that “it baffles and disturbs the minds” after considering the facts of the matter. Justice Morris-Ramlall told the rapist that he needed psychological intervention and ordered that he undergoes such treatment while in jail.

Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy appeared for the State, while lawyer Rabindra Mohabir represented Blake.

According to reports, shortly after Blake was remanded to prison for raping the elderly woman, he was among 13 inmates who broke out of the Lusignan Prison in July 2017.
