Months after Guyana’s top car racer Kristian Jeffrey lost part of his ear during an armed robbery after the Buju Banton “I Am Legend” concert, the 22-year-old man accused of the crime was today charged and remanded to prison on three charges.
Shamar Charles, of Alberttown, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was slapped with three armed robbery charges.
It is alleged that on May 26, 2019, at Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, Charles robbed Kristian Jeffrey of a chain valued at $400,000, one wallet valued at $10,000, and $15,000 in cash.
It was further alleged that on May 26, 2019, at Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara, while being armed with a gun, he robbed Jermaine Inniss of a gold chain valued at $440,000.
The final charge stated that on July 10, 2019, at Lombard Street, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, Charles robbed Tessa Griffith of a phone valued at $135,000, a gold band valued at $100,000, and a gold chain valued at $300,000.
Charles pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
Guyana Standard had been informed that, on May 26, Jeffrey and his friend Inniss had attended the Buju Banton concert at the National Stadium in Providence. The two friends called a taxi but, due to heavy traffic congestion, the car took some time to arrive so they decided to walk and meet the driver.
According to Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman, Jeffrey and Inniss were robbed at Flour Mill Road, Agricola, East Bank Demerara (EBD). They were held at gunpoint by the defendant and relieved of their valuables, the prosecutor said. Jeffrey, who won the Caribbean Group Four Championship twice, was shot during the confrontation.
He was taken to the Balwant Singh Hospital for treatment and lost part of his ear.
Meanwhile, facts in relation to the robbery committed on Griffith stated that on the day in question at around 12:00 hrs, the victim was standing outside her workplace when Charles, who was riding a motorcycle, approached her and relieved her of her valuables.
Prosecutor Blackman objected to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds of the serious nature of the allegations and the penalty the charges attract. Hence, Charles was remanded to prison until July 31.
