A young man whom the court heard breached a protection order and assaulted his ex-lover twice in one day was today charged and remanded to prison for the offence.
Twenty-two-year-old Neville Everson, a labourer, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He denied the charge which stated that on July 6, 2019, at James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted a woman.
The man’s lawyer, in a failed bail application for his client, told the court that the victim is in the habit of going over to his client’s residence.
Police Prosecutor Richard Harris in addressing the court stated that a protection order was issued by Magistrate Annette Singh on October 30, 2017, against the defendant.
However, on July 6, 2019, the woman was on her way to purchase food from a restaurant when she was attacked by Everson who dealt her several cuffs about her face and head. The court heard the woman, after receiving the cuffs about her body, was able to get away from the defendant.
The Prosecutor added that when the woman was returning from the restaurant Everson, who was hiding behind a truck, approached her for the second time and dealt her some more cuffs and kicks about her body.
The injured woman was then taken to the hospital where she was treated for her injuries and sent away.
The matter was then reported and Everson was arrested and later charged with the offence.
Prosecutor Harris made strong objections to the man being released on bail; according to the prosecutor, Everson is in the habit of going to the woman’s home. This, he says, shows clearly that the defendant has no respect for the court.
The Prosecutor also highlighted the fact that he is fearful for the life of the woman due to the recent articles of women being assaulted and even killed by their partners.
