Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty moments ago sentenced a former cashier and an ex-security guard to two years’ imprisonment each after finding them guilty of robbing the Woodlands Hospital of $1.4M.
Haniff Peters, 34, a security guard, of Lot 71 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, and Susan Daniels, 35, of Lot 16 North Section Canal #2 Polder, West Bank Demerara, had both denied the charge which alleged that on August 31, 2017, at the Woodlands Hospital, Carmichael Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown, they stole $1.4M in cash, the property of the Woodlands Hospital.
Two weeks ago, the magistrate had ruled that sufficient evidence was led against the defendants; hence, she found them guilty.
Today, the magistrate sentenced Daniels to two years’ imprisonment. However, it was ruled that Daniels would be a suspended one due to her show of remorse. The magistrate also took into consideration the fact that Daniels is a first time offender and a single parent who takes care of her three children.
On the other hand, Peters will begin serving his two-year sentence from today on the grounds that he was positively identified by a witness. The magistrate also highlighted the fact that Daniels in her statement had told the court that she was having financial problems and she confided in Peters who orchestrated to steal the money.
According to information, on the day in question, Daniels was taking the day’s money to the bank but later returned to her superior and informed them that she was robbed by a masked man.
The matter was then reported to the Brickdam Police Station and, during the investigation, it was revealed that Daniels gave the police false information. A further investigation carried out revealed that Daniels and Peters planned the robbery.
