Investigators probing the death of a 42-year-old taxi driver, which occurred last night at Cemetery Road, Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD), said that the father of two was killed after he attacked the passenger, who refused to pay him his fare.
Up to press time, crime scene ranks were in the area searching for possible eyewitnesses since there are no surveillance cameras where Owen Lynch was stabbed multiple times with his own icepick.
The Guyana Standard has been informed that the Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown taxi driver had picked up a passenger in Sophia around 21:45 hrs on Tuesday and dropped the individual off at Mocha.
Police said that they were able to establish a motive when the dispatcher at the base where the deceased worked, informed ranks that the victim had called her just before he was murdered to say that the passenger was refusing to pay.
The woman indicated that she advised the victim to stop and put the passenger out his car but then she subsequently lost contact with him.
Based on information received, Lynch—upon reaching Mocha, informed the passenger that the fare was $2500 but he (suspect) refused to pay. The killer was reportedly walking away from the deceased’s car when he (Lynch) is believed to have run behind him with the ice-pick.
The father of two was overpowered and subsequently stabbed multiple times. He died at the scene. No one has been arrested as yet.
