A fisherman whom the court heard fired several shots at a City Constabulary rank and was later caught hiding under a bridge was today remanded to prison.
Twenty-five-year-old Kevin Leacock of 32 James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Leacock pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on August 15 at Orange Walk, Bourda, Georgetown, he discharged a firearm at City Constabulary rank Brent Walcott, with the intent to maim, disfigure, or cause grievous bodily harm.
Leacock was represented by attorney-at-law Euclin Gomes who asked that his client be released on reasonable bail.
The lawyer told the court that at the time of his client’s arrest he was not in possession of any firearm. He added that his client was kept in custody for six days.
However, Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds of the serious nature of the allegation and the penalty the charge attracts.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question at around 05:30 hrs, Leacock was observed by a City Constable attempting to scale the western fence of the Bourda Market. The rank then raised an alarm and Leacock jumped from the fence, pulled out a gun from the waistband of his pants, and fired three rounds in Walcott’s direction.
The court heard the rank, who was armed at the time, returned fire but the defendant managed to escape. Shortly after, information on Leacock’s whereabout was received and a party of City Constabulary ranks went to Hadfield Street where they arrested him hiding under a bridge.
Hence, he was taken into custody and charged with the offence.
The Chief Magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Leacock to prison until September 18.
