A miner who admitted to breaking into a shop and stealing $300,000 in cash and $200,000 worth of Digicel phone cards was today sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for the offence.
Twenty-one-year-old Calvin DeSantos of Mahdia pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that between August 17 and August 18 at Campbelltown, Mahdia, he broke into the shop of Lee Xin Zuang and stole $300,000 in cash and $200,000 worth of Digicel phone cards.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on August 17 at around 19:10 hrs, the victim secured her business place and went to bed. The following morning at around 06:00 hrs, the victim observed the shop’s door open and soon realised that the articles mentioned in the charge were missing. The woman, upon viewing her CCTV footage, observed the defendant entering the shop and leaving with the articles.
The matter was then reported to the Mahdia Police Station and the defendant was arrested and subsequently charged.
The magistrate, after listening to the facts, sentenced DeSantos to two years behind bars.
