The general public is being advised of at least one fake account — purporting to be operated by the Ministry of the Presidency (MOTP) and President David Granger — that is luring unsuspecting citizens to execute money transfers/transactions via Mobile Money Guyana in order to secure homes at Providence, East Bank Demerara.

The fake account reads, “Good morning to all. The Ministry of the Presidency is here giving out 20 homes to persons today at the cost of $350,000 GYD. All houses are located in Providence Housing Scheme. Interested persons can inbox for more information.”

The MoTP said that these accounts are fake and malicious. Persons contacted via such accounts and who are being solicited for money are asked to make a report to the nearest police station.

Fake accounts on Facebook are becoming a troubling issue in Guyana. Just recently, racial slurs were published by an account purporting to be operated by a member of the opposition, driving local social media users into a frenzy.

From fake accounts of businesses to local artistes, the situation is bubbling out of control as arguments erupt on Facebook. Invitations have even been extended by an agitated few to take the issues into the “real world”.

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), is reportedly “monitoring” social media sites for instances of ethnic discrimination.

In many of the Facebook vacancies groups, there are individuals who lure unsuspecting users to send money in exchange for jobs on cruise ships and other jobs overseas.

There are also fake accounts of persons living overseas claiming to be in need of domestic workers. Interested persons are asked to pay an advance of US$500 for “processing” fees by their intended employer.
