Twenty-seven-year-old Casey Chapman, a taxi driver, of 77 South Sophia was today sentenced to a total of 10 years’ imprisonment.
He was found guilty on four firearm-related charges.
The sentences were handed down by Magistrate Rondell Weever in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.
The first allegation against Chapman stated that on November 26, 2018, at High and Princes Streets, Georgetown, while being in the company of others, he had in his possession a .32 Taurus pistol without being the holder of a firearm licence.
The second charge stated that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession one 9 mm Glock pistol without being the holder of a firearm licence.
It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession, 12 live rounds of 9 mm ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.
The last charge stated that on the same day, and at the same location, he had in his possession seven .32 ammunition when he was not licensed, firearm holder.
Chapman had denied the allegations on his first court appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
According to information, on November 26, 2018, police received information that three men were in a vehicle trailing a businesswoman from the Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle. As a result, roadblocks were set up.
The court heard that ranks from the Ruimveldt Police Station were on the lookout at High and Princes Streets when they observed three men sitting in a vehicle. The men were reportedly acting suspiciously.
The ranks then approached the vehicle where they identified themselves as officers. A search was conducted in the vehicle and the items mentioned in the charges were found.
The Magistrate sentenced Chapman to three years’ imprisonment on each of the firearm charges. In relation to each of the ammo charges, Chapman was to two years’ in jail.
The sentences will run concurrently, so he will only be spending three years behind bars.
