“Clearly, the independence of the judiciary has been restored. Constitutional matters are being dealt with expeditiously in keeping with the convention. No longer do such matters stall in the courts because of the intervention of the Executive, as was the case under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).”
These are the words of Peoples’ National Congress Reform (PNCR) executive member and Guyana’s State Minister, Dawn Hastings-Williams.
Addressing the press at Congress Place, Sophia this morning, the politician said that the decisions of courts are being honoured, and “gone are the days when the court ruled in favour of a citizen and the state refused to honour the court’s decision.”
Hastings-Williams said that Guyanese can be assured that the Coalition government respects the ruling of the courts and will ensure justice is done.
She noted also the PNCR supported government’s decision to appoint more judges to ensure that the judicial system is equipped to deliver justice.
Further, the PNCR member said that her party supports the coalition’s policy of developing specialised courts to deal with the many cases in the justice system. It also welcomes the decision to establish the Sexual Offences and Family courts which, Hasting-Williams said, will go a far way in ensuring that sexual offences and family matters will be dealt with expeditiously.
“The PNCR looks forward to the establishment of more specialised courts as the need arises.” She said.
The minister also thanked those who were instrumental in restoring scholarships to students who want to study law. This decision ends what she described as “discrimination” against poor, bright young people who, because of their economic circumstances, were deprived of the right to realise their academic and professional goal.
