A 31-year- man, who is accused of armed robbery and attempting to commit a felony, was today remanded to prison for the offences.
Marlon Carter appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.
The first charge stated that on September 10, 2019, at Five Star Backdam, North West District, Carter attempted to commit a felony, that is to say while being armed with a gun, he attempted to rob Zamal Poliah.
It was further alleged that on August 24, 2019, at Five Star Backdam, he robbed Kumar Nandkumar of 58.3 penny weight of raw gold valued $900,000.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day on question, Poliah was in the company of four workers on an all-terrain vehicle heading back to camp when they were stopped by the defendant who was armed with a gun.
The court heard the defendant told the men to lie on the ground and hand over their valuables.
The Prosecutor added that the men failed to comply and the defendant poured gasoline on them and attempted to set them alight.
The victim and his workers then rushed towards the defendant and they were able to disarm him.
In relation to Nandkumar matter, the court heard the victim was at a shop when the defendant approached him from behind and dealt him two lashes to his head with a gun and relieved him of his raw gold.
Both matters were reported; and, following an investigation, Carter was arrested and charged for the offenses.
Prosecutor Mansfield objected to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds of the serious nature of the offences and the penalties the charges attract.
Magistrate McLennan , after listening to the facts, remanded Carter to prison and instructed him to make his next court appearance on November, 4, at the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Courts.
