President David Granger decided to keep the eleventh Parliament of Guyana alive just in case the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) needs additional funds to conduct elections.
Today, the President noted that GECOM received over $8B between November of 2018 and April of this year. He told the media of his expectation that the money will be used to fulfil the needs of the commission. However, he said that if the need arises, the government wants to be able to provide GECOM with any additional funding which would mean returning to the House.
The dissolution of Parliament will occur when the President is satisfied that the entire process, as required by the commission, can move forward without obstruction.
Further to that, the president said that he will make the much-anticipated announcement this evening, regarding the date for elections.
Last week, GECOM’s Chairman (ret’d) Justice Claudette Singh, informed the Head of State through a letter, that the commission will be in a position to hold elections by the end of February of next year.
