A 24-year-old man who allegedly robbed a woman of her valuables, was today remanded to prison for the offence.

Fazel Shaffee of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, denied the charge which stated that on September 14, 2019 at New Market Street, Georgetown, while being in the company of others, he robbed Anitta Mohan of a phone valued $80,000 and a bag valued $5000.

An unrepresented Shaffee appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman stated that on the day in question, the woman was walking on New Market Street when she was approached by the defendant and others.

The court heard the defendant demanded that the woman hand over her valuables.

The victim, being fearful for her life, handed over the articles mentioned in the charge.

The defendant and the other individuals then made good their escape.

The matter was reported; an investigation was carried out, and Shaffee was arrested and charged for the offence.

Prosecutor Blackman objected to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds of the prevalence of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.

He also highlighted the fact that the court needs to send a stern message to persons who think it’s okay to go about committing robberies.

The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Shaffee to prison until November 2, 2019.
