Alfie Garraway, who was wanted by Police in connection with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, was today charged and released on bail.
The 39-year-old of Norton Street, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts where he was slapped with three charges.
The first charge stated that on October 5, 2019 at Norton Street, Lodge, he, along with Shaleza Ellis, had in their possession 13 grams of marijuana.
It was further alleged that on the same day, and at the same location, Ellis and Garraway had in their possession eight live rounds of .40 ammunition when they were not holders of a firearm license enforced at the time.
The last charge stated that on the same day, and at the same location, they had in their possession one .40 smith and Wesson firearm without being holders or firearm license.
Garraway pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to him.
However, the female who is jointly charged with Garraway failed to show to court today when the matters were called. This prompted the Chief Magistrate to issue an arrest warrant for her arrest.
Garraway’s lawyer, Stanley Moore, in a successful bail application, told the court that at the time of the search, his client was not at home. He added that his client later found out that a wanted bulletin was out for him and he turned himself in.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, ranks from the Major Crime Unit and the Brickdam Police Station went to Lot 71 Norton Street, Lodge where they made contact with Ellis.
A search was then carried out and the gun, ammunition and a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be narcotics were found in the home.
Ellis was then arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station. Following further investigation, a wanted bulletin was issued for Garraway’s arrest. He later surrendered. The allegation was then put to him and he denied.
With no objections raised by the Prosecutor, Garraway was released on $120,000 bail.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on November 13.
Garraway is one of three men who are accused of throwing a grenade at the vehicle owned by Glenn Lall, owner of Kaieteur News on June 4, 2015, at Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.
In that matter, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ruled that a prima facie case has been established against the suspects.
The three accused are to stand trial in the High Court.
Additionally, Garraway’s mother, Roseann of Lot 71 D’ Urban Street, Lodge was charged on October 09, last after being caught with 39 grams of cannabis. The police went to the woman’s home to look for the son when they discovered the illicit item.
According to information received, a parcel containing leaves, seeds, and stems were found locked in a room at the woman’s home. She admitted ownership of the drugs and alleged that she usually boils it and uses it as medicine. She was placed on a $60,000 bail.
