A 24-year-old block maker, who reportedly strangled a man in front of the Office of the Opposition Leader last month, has been stabbed and is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Ashaka John, of Lot 109 ‘A’ Field Sophia, was stabbed to the lower left abdomen during a fight at the Lusignan Prison last Friday.
Guyana Standard has been informed that the wounded inmate and another prisoner were involved in a scuffle when the block maker was injured. The detail of the fight is unclear at this point.
Prison Director, Gladwin Samuels (ag) confirmed that the inmate was stabbed on Friday. He is currently receiving treatment under guard.
John was charged with the murder of Jason Bowen, who was strangled during a suspected robbery on Church Street, Queenstown on October 12, last.
His lawyer, George Thomas, argued that his client is suffering from “mental problems” and had been seeing a doctor at the GPHC for the past few years. John was supposed to return to court yesterday having done a medical evaluation but the case did not continue due to him being hospitalized.
