Twenty three Haitians who are in Guyana legally were yesterday charged for departing Guyana illegally.
The group which consists of both males and females appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
With the aid of an interpreter, they all pleaded guilty to the charge which stated on January 13,2020 at Lethem, they departed Guyana illegally without the consent of an immigration officer.
According to information, the Haitians came to Guyana legally via the Chedi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) and were granted six months stay each. However, on January 12, the police at Lethem stopped a bus in which they were traveling and it was observed that they did not present themselves to an immigration officer before departing Guyana. They were all then arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and charged.
The Magistrate fined the Haitians $30,000 each or in default 40 days’ imprisonment.
