The 72-year-old man, who was brutally beaten on Sunday morning after his son was accused of stealing money from his employer, has died.
Ramsahoye Deochan of Strathspey, East Coast Demerara (ECD) died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) this morning.
Four persons have since been arrested for beating the elderly man.
According to information received, the deceased’s son reportedly stole an undisclosed amount of cash and a gold chain from his employer. He subsequently went into hiding when he was confronted, beaten and threatened to be handed over to the police.
Guyana Standard has been told that on Sunday morning, the businessman and three other persons went to the deceased’s home in search of his son. When they could not find the alleged thief, they attacked his father and destroyed items in the house.
The 72-year-old man was beaten with a piece of wood and was struck to the head with an amplifier.
He had to be rushed to the hospital where he remained until he succumbed around 01:30 hrs this morning.
His attackers were only arrested yesterday and this was only after the story hit the media.
The deceased’s relatives have accused the police of trying to cover up the story. They claimed that since the incident, they went to make a report but ranks refused to take statements.
The family is hoping that a thorough investigation can be done so justice is served.
