A 23-year-old Brazilian who is accused of murdering a Kuru Kuru, Linden/Soesdyke Highway miner, was today charged for the offence.
Deon Jonas was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on October 26, 2019 at Cuyuni River, Essequibo Magisterial District, he murdered David Atkinson.
An unrepresented Jonas appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He was remanded to prison until February 13 and will make his next appearance at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
According to information, Atkinson, along with two others, were at a mining camp when they were allegedly attacked by Jonas and another individual who held him and others at gunpoint and robbed them of a quantity of raw gold.
Atkinson was later found with a wound and multiple lacerations about his body.
He however related to ranks that he was chopped by Jonas.
The injured man succumbed while police were transporting him to the Bartica Hospital.
