A miner who the court heard threw a liquid substance in his friend’s face and took away his valuables, was today charged and remanded for the offence.
Twenty-one-year-old Ellis Calder of Mahdia, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on January 1, 2020, at 111 Miles, Mahdia, Essequibo Magisterial District, he stole from the person of Ray Singh one gold band valued $45,000 and $11,000 cash.
An unrepresented Calder appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Facts presented by the Court Prosecutor stated that on the day in question, at around 21:00 hrs, the men were consuming alcohol at a shop.
The court heard that the victim got up and went to the bathroom and the defendant followed him and threw a liquid substance in his face before relieving him of the articles. He then made good his escape. The matter was then reported to the police and he was later arrested on February 16.
The Prosecutor made serious objections to bail being granted to the defendant on the grounds that he has pending matters of similar nature at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
The court was informed that it was while the defendant was out on bail, he allegedly committed this new offence and if bail should be granted to him he would not return to court for the trial.
The Chief Magistrate, after listening to the facts remanded Calder to prison on the grounds that he might be a flight risk. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on April 14,2020 at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
