The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) said that there is indeed an ongoing investigation into the unrest at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, this afternoon, where there was a standoff between two groups of citizens.
When the Guyana Standard arrived on the scene, scores of persons were gathered on Market Road, while another group was standing at the Railway Embankment. They were both hurling insults at each other. The “Riot Police” were present with shields trying to maintain peace.
It is unclear what caused the misunderstanding. However, multiple sources told this publication that there was a tent erected at a private residence opposite the Polling Place, where persons visited to be assisted on where they should vote.
Allegations began surfacing about the distribution of fake Identification cards at the location. This caused a crowd of persons from outside the village to descend upon the area in an attempt to thwart any malintent.
Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield, said tonight that the Commission is aware of the incident and is awaiting the findings of an investigation. He added that as soon as the election matters conclude, GECOM officials there will provide a brief on what transpired.
