Regional Commander, Simon Mc Bean has confirmed that two persons are currently being questioned after a report has been made that one of the men was seen jumping from a helicopter this morning at Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The incident is said to have happened sometime around 11:30 hrs at the seawall, in close proximity to the crematorium.
The two individuals are at the Vreed en Hoop Police Station. The individual who allegedly jumped from the helicopter, which was flying very low at the time, is a Brazilian national.
During interrogation, he claimed that he only speaks Spanish. The identity of the second person is unknown but it is suspected that he is a taxi driver, who was transporting the Spanish-speaking man to a hotel when their vehicle was intercepted by the police.
Guyana Standard has been informed that residents of Ruimzeight noticed the helicopter circling the area for sometime. It finally came down low at the seawall and someone was seen jumping from it.
That individual allegedly walked to a rum shop close-by where a taxi picked him up. Reports are that residents called the police and then followed the vehicle until the police intercepted it.
The driver identified himself as the taxi driver and claimed that the Brazilian national called the base he worked and asked for a car. The driver claimed that he (Brazilian) was first heading to a hotel in the village and then to Georgetown.
More details will follow shortly.
