“ I sold the phone for $8,000, next to nothing. I don’t really steal so if you give me another chance you won’t ever see me back in here,” were the words of a man who pleaded guilty to stealing a woman’s phone.

Fifty-three-year-old Philbert Cush of Broad Street, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Cush pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on February 20, 2020, at Robb Street, Georgetown, he stole one iPhone 11 valued $260,000, property of Ronda Harry.

Cush, in his explanation to the court stated,” I get three children to mine and I was frustrated so I tek a few shots and ended up picking up the woman phone.”

However, facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, the victim was at her clothing store on Robb Street and her phone was on a table.

The court heard, the defendant walked in the store and was pricing clothes. After a while the defendant picked up the phone and left without buying anything.

The matter was then reported and following investigation, police viewed CCTV footage at the store and it showed the defendant removing the phone.

Further investigation was carried out and he was later arrested on March 6 at High Street while hanging out with friends. It was while in custody he admitted to stealing the phone and selling it at Stabroek Market for $8000, hence the present charge.

The Chief Magistrate in ruling, told the court that she took into consideration the fact that he pleaded guilty on his first court appearance and apologized for his action.

She added,” Action has consequences and a better standard is expected of you because you are 53 years old.” She then sentenced him to 18 months behind bars.
