The National COVID-19 Task Force (NCTF) NCTF is concerned that a number of businesses and even some individuals, are operating in an irresponsible manner since precautionary measures such as social distancing are being ignored.
The NCTF warned that such a cavalier approach can seriously impair the efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 and could have a devastating impact on the Guyanese populace. In light of this, the NCTF said it is monitoring the conduct of the citizenry and considering various measures, including extreme ones, which have been instituted in other countries, to impose restrictions on the movement of persons for a defined period until the threat is abated.
While it did not state what some of the extreme measures are, in some countries, persons are being beaten by law enforcement officers for violating orders to stay at home and in other parts of the world, some persons face jail time.
The Guyana Standard understands that the Chairman of NCTF, Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo has lauded the efforts of Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence and the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) in containing the spread of COVID-19 and in screening, testing, quarantining and isolating persons who are suspected or are confirmed to have contracted COVID-19.
The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Guyana remains 5, inclusive of one death. The other four persons are in isolation.
