A handyman, who police said admitted to trafficking a quantity of marijuana, was today charged for the offence.
Forty-one-year-old Richard Pillay of Melanie, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on July 16,2019, at Norton Street, Lodge, he had in his possession two kilograms of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Pillay appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs- Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Richard Innis stated that on the day in question, police, acting on information went to a restaurant located at Norton Street Lodge where they made contact with the defendant.
The court heard a search was carried out on his possession and the narcotics was found in a haversack. He was told of the offence to which he admitted ownership of the drugs.
Hence, he was arrested and taken to the station and charged.
Prosecutor Inniss objected to bail being granted to Pillay citing that when he was arrested, he was released on station bail and instructed to report to the station but never did.
The court heard it was only recently ranks saw him walking in the streets and arrested him.
The Magistrate, after listening to the facts granted Pillay $75,000 bail. Condition of the bail is that he report to the Narcotics Branch every Monday until the hearing and determination of the trial.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on April 22.
